In This Article
Pind Daan in Varanasi is the offering of pindas to named ancestors at the Ganga, performed with a Kashi pandit who speaks the sankalpa in your gotra. It takes two to three hours and costs from ₹7,100. Families often perform it alongside Asthi Visarjan on the same visit. Our Pind Daan in Varanasi page has the current packages.
What Pind Daan is
Pinda are balls of rice mixed with black sesame, barley and honey, offered to named ancestors. The offering stands for the body the departed no longer has, and giving it is what the tradition holds allows the passage onward. The rite is distinct from Asthi Visarjan, which is the immersion of ashes, and from the annual shradh.
Why Kashi
The Garuda Purana and the Skanda Purana both treat Kashi as a place where the ancestral obligation can be discharged. The Ganga turns north at Varanasi, flowing back towards its source, which the tradition reads as carrying the departed upstream. Shiva is held to be present in the city itself rather than visiting it.
Two ideas sit behind the rite. Pitru rin is the debt owed to the ancestors, one of the three debts a householder carries. Pitru dosha is the condition described when that debt is left unpaid across generations. The remedy the tradition prescribes is the rite itself, performed properly. We do not promise outcomes beyond that, and no honest pandit will.
Which ghat
- Manikarnika. The principal cremation ghat and the one most associated with the rite. Busy, continuously. Its mythology is in our Manikarnika guide.
- Harishchandra. The older cremation ghat, smaller and quieter.
- Pishach Mochan. Where rites for a troubled or untimely death are performed. Separate from the standard circuit; see our note on Pishach Mochan and Narayan Bali.
- Dashashwamedh and Assi. Used for tarpan and the associated offerings.
The rite, step by step
- Sankalpa. The vow, naming your gotra, the ancestors and the purpose.
- Snan. The ritual bath, or Ganga water sprinkled, before the offering.
- Pinda preparation. The pandit prepares the pinda with rice, sesame, barley and honey.
- The offering. Pinda offered at the ghat with the mantras for the departed.
- Tarpan. Water offerings made by the family, for the named ancestors and the lineage.
- Close. The rite completes and the family takes prasad.
When to perform it
Pind Daan is valid on any day. The common choices are Pitru Paksha, Amavasya, the ancestor’s death tithi, and within the first year as part of the sapindikarana. Mornings are preferred and most rites are done before midday. Our note on ritual timings and muhurat in Varanasi covers the auspicious windows.

What the rite does for a family
The scriptural account is that the offering reaches the ancestors and settles the debt owed to them. The part families more often describe afterwards is different: that grief which had nowhere to go was given something to do. Preparing the pinda with your own hands, speaking your grandfather’s name in the sankalpa, offering water facing the right direction. These are tasks, and performing them is what many families find changes the weight of it.
There is no correct way to hold yourself at the ghat. Some families are composed and some are not, and the pandit has seen both.
If you cannot travel
The rite is performed at Varanasi in your name, with a pratinidhi standing in for the family, and you join by video or receive the recording. Families spread across countries use this because it removes the problem of everyone reaching Varanasi on one day. Our guide to arranging Varanasi rites from abroad covers it.
Common questions
Can Pind Daan be done without ashes?
Yes. Pind Daan is an offering to the ancestors, not a rite performed on remains. It is commonly done years after a death.
Should we do it at Varanasi or Gaya?
Both are valid. Gaya carries the specific association with Pind Daan and the texts treat the rite there as not needing repetition. Varanasi suits families already coming for Asthi Visarjan. Many perform both over time.
Can a daughter perform it?
Yes, and our pandits conduct it without qualification. Tell us the relationship so the sankalpa is set correctly.
How many ancestors can be named?
Several in one rite. Give us the names and relationships when you book so the pandit can prepare the sequence.
Arranging the rite
Send us the ancestors’ names, your gotra and the dates you can travel, and we will confirm the pandit, the ghat and the total in writing beforehand. Packages are on our Pind Daan in Varanasi page.
